Background: Decline in language has emerged as a new potential biomarker for the early detection of Alzheimer\&$\#$39;s disease (AD). It remains unclear how sensitive language measures are across different tasks, language domains, and languages, and to what extent changes can be reliably detected in early stages such as subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Method: Using a scene construction task for speech elicitation in a new Spanish/Catalan speaking cohort (N = 119), we automatically extracted features across seven domains, three acoustic (spectral, cepstral, and voice quality), one prosodic, and three from text (morpholexical, semantic, and syntactic). They were forwarded to a random forest classifier to evaluate the discriminability of participants with probable AD dementia, amnestic and nonamnestic MCI, SCD, and cognitively healthy controls. Repeated-measures analyses of variance and paired-samples Wilcoxon signed-ranks test were used to assess whether and how performance differs significantly across groups and linguistic domains. Results: The performance scores of the machine learning classifier were generally satisfactorily high, with the highest scores over .9. Model performance was significantly different for linguistic domains (p $\<$ .001), and speech versus text (p = .043), with speech features outperforming textual features, and voice quality performing best. High diagnostic classification accuracies were seen even within both cognitively healthy (controls vs. SCD) and MCI (amnestic and nonamnestic) groups. Conclusion: Speech-based machine learning is powerful in detecting cognitive decline and probable AD dementia across a range of different feature domains, though important differences exist between these domains as well. The successes of contextual word embeddings learned by training large-scale language models, while remarkable, have mostly occurred for languages where significant amounts of raw texts are available and where annotated data in downstream tasks have a relatively regular spelling. Conversely, it is not yet completely clear if these models are also well suited for lesser-resourced and more irregular languages. We study the case of Old French, which is in the interesting position of having relatively limited amount of available raw text, but enough annotated resources to assess the relevance of contextual word embedding models for downstream NLP tasks. In particular, we use POS-tagging and dependency parsing to evaluate the quality of such models in a large array of configurations, including models trained from scratch from small amounts of raw text and models pre-trained on other languages but fine-tuned on Medieval French data.

The present paper will explore several issues which, I think, have been close to L\éa\’s theoretical heart throughout her entire career, that is the complex interplay between argument structure, event structure, actionality, tense and aspect parameters in the verb\’s morphosyntax to semantics interface. Her numerous publications on transitivity, voice/ ergativity, together with their correlates with respect to tense-aspect and actionality, are a clear indication of a distinctly acquired taste for these particular theoretical notions\—a taste L\éa had evidently developed as early as her PhD thesis (Nash 1995), and has not stopped cultivating since then, cf. e.g. Nash (2017).

In this paper we present an analysis of the information structural properties\ of different types of verb and sentence modifying adjuncts under a QUD\ approach. Our study is based on naturalistic data from English, German,\ and French containing adjuncts such as temporal, spatial, or manner prepositional\ phrases, as well as different types of adverbial clauses. The analyses\ relies on Riester et al. (2018)\’s approach, which identifies the (generally\ implicit, sometimes overt) Question Under Discussion preceding each utterance\ of a text through explicit pragmatic principles, and derives from it\ the information structure of the utterance. The analysis of adjuncts\ within this approach shows that in certain contexts, though conveying\ new information, adjuncts do not answer the QUD that is answered by the\ sentence they syntactically depend on. We argue that these adjuncts answer\ a different QUD and behave as independent discourse units. As such, they\ have an information structure of their own and are in a rhetorical relation\ with their host clause. Our analysis sheds light on the similarities\ between adjuncts and Potts (2005)\&$\#$39;s supplements: both can be accounted\ for as independent discourse units; however, while supplements display\ projective behavior, adjuncts do not. Following Venhuizen et al. (2014),\ we ascribe this difference to their different semantic anchor (nominal\ vs verbal). Our work therefore highlights a different way for an expression\ to be independent at a discourse level, other than being projective content.

A new definition of non-at-issue (NAI) material in terms of optional information is proposed, which is based on an explicit method of reconstructing the Question Under Discussion and the information structure of utterances in naturalistic data (Riester et al 2018).\ According to this definition, verb and sentence modifiers share important properties with NAI material. We therefore argue that these expressions may represent NAI material, and apply classic diagnostics for non-at-issueness to them. We further show that such expressions are only \‘part-time\’ NAI triggers, namely, unlike supplements or other well-known NAI content, their NAI status varies depending on the context. We focus in particular on temporal and locative modifiers and on conditional clauses in order to show such a property. We finally discuss the position and status of NAI expressions in the QUD tree, showing that such expressions may, but are not always allowed to, have a place in that tree.\

constructions in French?}, year = {2016}, month = {09/2016}, abstract = {

It is widely known that some constructions like left-dislocation (Les gateaux, je les ai mang\és / The biscuits, I ate them.), though widespread in spoken corpora are marked in standard written French. Acceptability judgment experiments in written context show stigmatization compared to other pragmatically marked constructions (e.g. clefts), even in felicitous contexts. We replicated those experiments using spoken sentences, and a written speeded grammaticality judgment paradigm.\
In spoken French we did not find any differences to the previous experiments. Even with the right prosody, left-dislocations are judged significantly less acceptable than clefts in their respective felicitous contexts. The task demands seem to encourage metalinguistic judgments based on sociolinguistic parameters.\
Speeded grammaticality judgments (SGJ), however, show equally high acceptability rates for left-dislocations and clefts. Ungrammatical clefts with clitics, on the other hand, are judged strongly unacceptable while pragmatically odd left-dislocations without clitics are judged moderately acceptable. This is coherent with gradient acceptability accounts where clefts with clitics are ungrammatical syntax wise (hard constraint) and left-dislocations without clitics are possible grammatically, but need a salient alternative to be felicitous (soft constraint).\
This series of experiments shows that challenging tasks like SGJ provide results closer to the actual usage of stigmatized constructions.

The Minimalist Program claims that only two notions of locality are necessary: phasal locality and intervention locality (in the form of the Minimal Link Condition). This paper asks whether the unification of the two is possible or desirable. An argument against unification would consist in showing that a process A obeys one locality condition and doesn\’t obey the other and that another process B does exactly the reverse. Two phenomena are considered, which fit this description \– respectively interpretation (R-I) and clitic placement (CL-PL). Their contrasting behavior in the French faire-construction indicates that each one obeys a locality condition that the other does not: CL-PL obeys phasal locality, R-I some form of minimality. The theoretical implications of these findings for the theory of locality and the architecture of grammar are examined in the conclusion.

This comparative study examines the morphosyntactic parameters
governing the distribution of special inflection in constituent interrogatives and focus constructions in Hausa and Coptic Egyptian. In theselanguages, relative
\’tense-aspect-mood (TAM) markers occur in relativeclauses, constituent interrogatives and declarative focus constructions. However, special inflection is not a clause-typing device but is governed by syntactic conditions, since both languages also have focus/wh-constructionslacking relativeTAMs: both
languages allow in situ and ex situ focus/wh-constructions, but while Hausa
special inflection occurs in ex situ constructions, Coptic special inflection occurs in insitu constructions.A transformational copy theory analysis reduces
the parametric differences between Hausa and Coptic to different pronunciation sites of the displaced focus/wh-phrase: either the top
copy in its displaced position in the specifier of Focus Phrase (FP),
or the lower copy in its thematic position. An additional parameter
reminiscent of the Doubly-filled COMP Filter is set for Hausa to
allow both specifier and head of FP to be spelt out (pronounced)
at once, resulting in the coincidence of fronting and special inflection,
while the same parameter in Coptic is set to prohibit both\  the head\  and
the specifier of FP spelling out at once, ruling out the coincidence
of special inflection\  and fronting.

Abstract Coptic {(Ancient} Egyptian, 3rd to 12th c. {CE)} is a language of the isolating/analytic type, with an almost one-to-one correspondence between functional morphemes and words. The present study aims at an exhaustive description and analysis of the language\&$\#$39;s large and diversified inventory of particle words. Functional or grammatical particles encode code tense, aspect, mood categories on the one hand and register wh-dependencies in a broad range of focus-sensitive constructions on the other hand. The central hypotheses are: (i) functional particles are not acategorial parts of speech, but rather fall into two distinct classes of verb-related and complementizer-related categories, (ii) they are not in any sense structurally deficient heads: they can project a specifier position (when endowed with an {EPP} feature) and they can act as phase heads and (iii) the core syntax of the language is laid down by the positive setting of an analyticity macroparameter {(Huang}, {Sino\–Kwa:} Analyticity, parametric theory, and the lexical-functional divide, 2008). High analyticity involves the division of labor between defective verbal categories and morphologically independent tense particles, which agree with but do not attract the main verb.

Introduction v Currently dominant neo-davidsonian view on aspect calculus has driven many to study event structure in terms of mereological, part-of relationships ; it will be argued here that this approach is not appropriate for theoretical \& empirical reasons (cf. Asher (1993) \& Verkuyl (1993) for related positions, on philosophical grounds); v An alternative approach based on discourse-like relations will be proposed. Main features : Explicit relations between situations, sub-situations (or situation stages) and aspectual viewpoints ; Empirical evidence in a variety of languages suggesting indeed that event types / event structure (= situation structure / eventuality structure) should be regarded as a language-specific issue. 2 Preliminary definitions : some basic aspectual concepts 2.1 Defining situation structure and lexical aspect
