(The goal of  The Laughing Infant (TELIN) project is to synthesize work on language acquisition, on the semantics and pragmatics of laughter, on Socially Interactive Agents (SIAs), on analysis and synthesis of laughter, and on machine learning, with the aim of developing an SIA who will emulate an infant during the acquisition of laughter and by using this SIA to test several learning algorithms that take as input different modalities (audio, facial expression, language) and contexts (playing with toys, interacting with parents and siblings) and output laughter.

Sept 2016-Aug 2021 Senior member Institute Universitaire de France.

Enseignement

1. LCHAY010 : Language and its interfaces (M1S1)

(2h) 6 ETCS

• A central question for many natural social systems considered from a variety of perspectives in this course is: how does meaning emerge in interaction within that system? These perspectives can be instantiated by asking questions like the following: What is meaning in natural language? What is the relationship between NL meaning and meaning among interaction systems of other species? To what extent is the grammar that underwrites Natural Language hard coded genetically to what extent emergent from interaction? How do we apply notions of meaning to analyse cognitive experience in artistic media such as theatre and music?
Topics covered include: communicative interaction among non-human adults, language acquisition and interaction. an interactive based view of language, the meaning of manual and facial gesture, language and theatre, language and humour, the relation between music and language. the meaning of poetry.

2.

LCHDY010-Syntax, semantics, discourse 2
Taught in English, 2h, 6 ECTS

The course has three parts: it starts by considering Richard Montague’s approach to quantification, an approach which revolutionised formal semantics and is still influential; we then discuss the theory of Generalised Quantification, in which a notion invented by the logician Mostowski became the basis for the dominant approach to describing noun phrase meaning. Finally, we consider recent work which tries to capture the insights of Montague and Generalised Quantifier Theory, but in a way that is cognitively realistic and conceptually simpler and hence  appropriate for describing dialogue.

3.

LCHCY020 – Discourse and dialogue (M2S3)
Taught in English, 2h tutorial, 6 ECTS

This course synthesises various approaches to semantics and pragmatics (including speech act theory, language games, Conversational Analysis, Post-Montogovian formal semantics, Martin-Löf Type Theory) to develop a formal approach to describing dialogical interaction.
The perspective we  adopt involves considering interaction as it occurs at early stages of language acquisition, among mature adults, and also a neural perspective that explains why linguistic abilities are fallible. Topics covered include:  Non-verbal social signals (crying, smiling, laughter) and emotion; Reference and pointing; the response space of questions; grammars at initial stages of acquisition; exclamatives; Clarification Interaction; Language games.
