Aimée Lahaussois (HTL/UPC): A look into exogamous Himalayan lexicography in the mid-19th century: Hodgson's Vocabularies of two Kiranti languages 

  

This talk presents two mid-19th century vocabularies of Kiranti languages Vayu and Bahing (Eastern Nepal) compiled by Brian Hodgson and which accompany grammar sketches of the same languages. The vocabularies have a number of features of interest, among which different ordering systems for various parts of speech, large numbers of derived forms, and very minimal treatment interjections and ideophones. These features are examined for what they reveal about 19th century lexicographical and data collection practices in the early description of Himalayan languages.
