Simulating bilingual sentence production: code switching and cross-linguistic priming

The two grammars known by a bilingualdo not form independent systems but interact with each other, as isclear from phenomena such as code switching and cross-linguisticsyntactic priming. I will present a neural network model, based onChang’s (2002) Dual-Path model of sentence production, thatsimulates the production of sentences in two languages. The modeldemonstrates how certain code-switching patterns can emerge withoutexposure to any code switches, and how cross-linguistic priming canarise from simple error-based learning.
